Something like two weeks ago I came up with an idea for a virtual travel site, called something like travelless.com (BTW, the domain seems to be for sale). The main idea is to crack a big dilemma that intelligent people are facing today. On the other hand it would be very nice to travel around the globe and meet a lot of new people from different cultures. In the same time we all know that travelling causes a huge amount of greenhouse gases to be emitted in the atmosphere. So, put briefly, if I travel I’ll experience some nice cultures that soon don’t exist due to my travelling there.
The cure, I think, could be a site dedicated to virtual travelling. Each country would have their own sections where anybody outside that country could experience it virtually. There would a vast amount of material available including photos, diaries, videos, documentaries, recipes, maps, magazines, newspapers, books and so on. In addition you could find there a local pen pal, buy local handicrafts, participate online discussion and maybe even take language courses. The sole idea would be to make virtual travelling as live as possible and therefore a good alternative for travelling physically. There are thousands of things that one could do with such a site but I think you’ve got the idea already.
For the selling arguments I’d just like to add few. In addition to saving the planet, the site would also make it possible for people without sufficient assets to go and see the world. And even if you had, you’d have to prioritise as the world is vast and you simply can’t see everything, except virtually. And last, but not least, think of a situation where a pandemic has broke out. And one day it will. No one would like to travel unless it’s absolutely inevitable. Then, I suspect, a site like this would really hit paydirt.
